• The “Fire Department of the Borough of Mantoloking” was established by ordinance on August 15, 1930.The authorized strength was one chief engineer, one assistant chief engineer, and not more than 20 firemen (census records indicate the population at the time was 37). Fire company members had to be 18 – 50 years old and residents of Mantoloking(and obviously though unmentioned: male!)
  • Once appointed a fireman could continue as a member until being “removed” at age 65.
  • It was the chief engineer’s duty to “designate one member of the fire company as driver and one member of the fire company as assistant driver of the automobile apparatus
  • “In 1936 the ordinance was amended to require firemen to present a “certificate from a practicing dental surgeon indicating that the applicant’s mouth, gums, and teeth are free from disease.
  • “It has always been against the law and subject to a $100 fine or 90 days in jail to “willfully drive any automobile, wagon, or other vehicle over any hose or into any apparatus.”
